Broadband Speed |

Aug 24th 2009 19:59 Report Abuse | | As much as I enjoy living in Charfield the Broadband speed I receive constantly drives me mad! As far as I can tell if you are on the Falfield exchange you can get up to 0.5 Mbps whereas if your are the WUE exchange you get up to 2.5 Mbps. As you have probably gathered I’m on the Falfield exchange.
So apart from laying a long line over the railway to get on the WUE exchange has anyone else on the Falfield exchange had any luck with increasing their speed? Cable is not available and all the mobile broadband connections I have tried are far worse.

Sep 6th 2009 18:16 Report Abuse | | The speed of broadband is affected by many things. The main thing is distance from the exchange, but internal wiring, number and quality of telephones and telephone sockets and other things take their toll. I dare say Falfield residents enjoy fast Internet access, but we're at the very end of a long bit of copper.
The Falfield (01454)exchange serves Charfield up to the railway line when Wotton (01453) takes over - again at the end of a slightly shorter but still long bit of copper! We're doomed to slow broadband by reasons of geography. Over the years BT has improved the encoding technology but until and unless they embed expensive infrastructure in the village we're unlikely to see speeds increase very much.
My own service is variable between 1 and 2MB/s. I've just tested at http://www.thinkbroadband.com and it came out with
Speed Down 1742.27 Kbps ( 1.7 Mbps )
Speed Up 375.17 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Unplug all your other phones and see what you get. It may be that you can speed up your service. |

Sep 6th 2009 19:39 Report Abuse | | Mark,
Just tried the http://www.thinkbroadband.com speed test and got:
Speed Down 472.01 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 238.38 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
The BT website states:
"We estimate your maximum connection speed to be 0.512Mbps, which is the fastest speed your line can currently support."
So I'm getting the maximum BT thinks I can get, I assume you must be on the Wotton side of the line then?
www.samknows.com
States that "BT have set a target date of Q4 2009 for the switch to 21CN for the Falfield exchange"
Although reading about the 21CN it doesn't necessarily mean the speed will increase. |

Sep 7th 2009 14:16 Report Abuse | | No, in fact I'm close by the Memorial Hall on the Falfield side. I don't work for BT but I suggest you should get better than that unless there are issues I'm not aware of. 21CN will speed up the maximum rate at the exchange but unfortunately the copper length will determine the useable speed, so we'll see no difference until and unless BT get off their whatsits and embed new fibre and cabinets in the village. |

Nov 6th 2009 10:22 Report Abuse | | Hi there,
I'm looking to move to Charfield over the next few months, the Woodlands estate to be precise. I would need to work from home so I need a reliable internet connection. I currently live in London so I'm spoilt with a very fast Virgin fibre optic BB connection.
How usable is the internet connection there? Are there any plans afoot to install cable in the area? What about Sky broadband - I'm not familiar with that?
Thanks

Nov 6th 2009 11:44 Report Abuse | | Hi MrH,
I live in Woodlands Road and can only get around 2Mb/sec on broadband. I know that some of our neighbours can only get 1Mb/sec. It very much depends on where you are in Woodlands Road and the quality of your bit of copper!
Haven't heard anything about cable or Sky.
Cheers

Nov 6th 2009 12:13 Report Abuse | | Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the swift reply. 2Mb would be OK for me. That is quicker than what the BT broadband checker tells me when I enter the postcode so that is good. Who do you use as your ISP?
Is your connectin reliable? Do you use it on a daily basis for work?
Cheers

Nov 19th 2009 17:49 Report Abuse | | Just so people don't think I ignored mrh - we've had a few offline conversations about this!
For anyone else that reads this thread and wonders what the answers were:
I use Bytemark.co.uk as my ISP. Very friendly, and the connection is probably no more or less reliable than anyone else as BT are the ones carrying the service.
I worked from home for 3 years using our connection and it was fine.
Cheers

Jan 7th 2010 13:59 Report Abuse | | The broadband speed tails off (as most things seem to do) just past Woodlands, so if you live further up towards Little Bristol, then 0.5 is probably the best you can hope for as we are literally at the end of the Falfield line. I've spoken to BT (and Sky Broadband) and there are no plans to upgrade.
For info I get 0.1 most of the time - it's rubbish! :) |

Feb 15th 2010 18:28 Report Abuse | | In desperation, I borrowed an Orange Mobile broadband dongle to try, and using http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest and got:
Speed Down 781.79 Kbps ( 0.8 Mbps )
Speed Up 303.78 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Well its better than my BT line (see above) but not by enough to make it worth changing. Though Kelly it would beat your 0.1 Mbps!

Mar 10th 2010 12:58 Report Abuse | | We're with Sky and in Woodlands. We only get about 0.5 mbps.
Can be frustrating!

Mar 10th 2010 17:51 Report Abuse | | I've been in Woodlands road now for a month and have two BT lines installed in my property. Each using a different ISP.
The max speed I've had is 2.2Mb/sec on either of the lines - average is usually 1.7 for me which is fine for my needs.
I guess we need the Falfield exchange upgraded to get a faster speed or get a cable company to install some fibre optics.
Cheers

May 16th 2010 15:22 Report Abuse | | Hi i am really fed up with the broadband connection and think we all need to get together and sort it out maybe start a petition up to see if that helps BT get their act together and upgrade everything that needs doing ant do any harm !!) i currently get 0.22 download speed its terrible and only get that 2-3 days a week when it decides to work atall !!!
just wondering how far spread this problem is.. is it all the village having problems ??? |

May 21st 2010 14:26 Report Abuse | | Hi EMMABZ. I've just re-checked mine and it's per normal
Date 21/05/10 14:23:30
Speed Down 1778.17 Kbps ( 1.7 Mbps )
Speed Up 377.71 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
(Middle of Charfield)
220kb/s suggests there is a serious problem with your line. Ask your ISP to check it with BT?
